Meet our College Pastor & his family
Matt was a former All-American Track & Field athlete from Sam Houston State. He has a passion and zeal for Jesus Christ that is contagious. Since coming to faith in Christ as a freshman in college, He has learned that God is the only one who can fix our brokenness. Matt has served in both youth and college ministry and truly enjoys helping today’s youth understand how much they are loved by God! Fully convinced the gospel not only saves us, but sustains us, Matt seeks to show both the challenge and the adventure of what it means to know God and be known by Him. He is blessed to be a Husband to Sarah, and a father to Norah.
Second Baptist is located less than a mile from the campus of Sam Houston State University (SHSU). While although appealing, our proximity to the campus of SHSU is not what truly sets us apart. At Second Baptist we want you to know that we are a body of believers in Jesus Christ who are committed to living out the gospel. We show up and engage with one another in a real way as we read scripture together, discuss the bible, and learn to apply it to our lives. It's our desire to get you connected to your new church home! We are committed to helping you discern God's will for your life and empowering you to become all that God has created you to be!
Every Sunday we gather together at 10 AM in the College and Career Room to enjoy donuts and coffee as we dig into the Word of God. At 11 AM we walk together over to the sanctuary to join the rest of the church in corporate worship.
We believe as people, we have been created to bear the image of God and proclaim his glory. The greatest resource the church has is not its technology or wealth. It is the people themselves, image bearers of God, purchased by the blood of Jesus, to be sent to proclaim the gospel through which they have been redeemed.
We recognize that God has given us other people, not only to help build us up and encourage us, but also to sanctify us. Living out the gospel is much harder in community where people can sin against you; this is how you grow, this is one of the means by which God has given to us to help us be conformed into His image! We have chosen to call our small group bible studies "LifeGroups" because we believe in doing life together. In our LifeGroups, we wage war against sin and forgive one another as we put on the full armor of God; we are marked by compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. We exhort one another to continually grow in our faith as we all seek to not only be disciples, but to make disciples.
We are excited to announce that we will be launching college LifeGroups Spring 2018. If you are interested in potentially leading a LifeGroup, please contact Matt Johnson at MJ.CollegePastor@gmail.com
